Our Lady of Lourdes Health has been an integral part of the Acadiana community since 1949, and this year we mark 75 years of healing, mission and compassion.
The story of Our Lady of Lourdes began in 1945, when Monsignor A.F. Isenberg, a priest from the Diocese of Lafayette, was injured in a car accident. He was so moved by the care that he received at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge that he subsequently persuaded the Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady (FMOL) to continue their ministry by opening a hospital in Lafayette.
Four years later, Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, led by Sister Marie Brendan Donegan opened its doors as a subsidiary of St. Francis Hospital on August 1, 1949, and in 1957 it transitioned to a separate corporation.
Throughout Our Lady of Lourdes’ 75-year history, many FMOL Sisters have helped the ministry grow to become the healthcare leader in Acadiana, dedicated to comprehensive care and medical excellence.
After 62 years on the St. Landry campus, Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center moved to its current location on Ambassador Caffery Campus on June 25, 2011. In planning for the future, leaders knew renovation was not an option, choosing instead to innovate. Building a hospital from the ground up, for the future of medicine, this investment in our community solidified Our Lady of Lourdes’ commitment to care for Acadiana.
On Thursday, August 1, 2024, Our Lady of Lourdes Health celebrated 75 years serving Acadiana. Reflecting on a rich history of excellence in care and innovation, the celebration included team member events throughout the day and a special Mass at St. Agnes Chapel, led by the Most Reverend J. Douglas Deshotel, Bishop of the Diocese of Lafayette, followed by a reception. Our Lady of Lourdes Health will continue its longstanding tradition of providing high-quality, compassionate care to the nine-parish Acadiana region and will celebrate this milestone throughout the year.
In 2011, Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center opened a new, 45-acre, state-of-the-art hospital on Ambassador Caffery Parkway. In 2019, Our Lady of Lourdes acquired Women’s & Children’s Hospital and Heart Hospital of Lafayette to add to our already robust services.
