Unlike every other organ in the human body, the liver can regenerate when part of it is removed. In fact, researchers have discovered that as little as 30% of the original liver is needed for regeneration. This process only takes a few weeks.
As with any surgery, the extent of the procedure and whether it was open or minimally invasive affects the amount of time it takes to recover. An open liver resection may require 5-7 days of recovery time in the hospital, while a minimally invasive procedure would typically only need 1-2 days.
On the other hand, needle biopsies and microwave ablation are outpatient procedures that don’t require a hospital stay.
Patients are under general anesthesia during the ablation procedure, so they do not feel pain during it. The site where the needle entered their body may be sore for a few days after the procedure.
This timing depends on a variety of factors, including the necessity of additional testing to determine the type of cancer if the biopsy proves to be malignant. Your doctor will contact you as soon as possible to discuss the results.
