Podiatry is the medical specialty focused on leg health below the knee. This includes the toes, foot and ankle, and lower leg. Podiatrists provide diagnosis and treatment of all bones, muscles, and connective tissue (tendons, ligaments, and fascia) in the lower legs.
Your feet are amazing and very complex. Together, they contain a quarter of all the bones in your body. Each foot has 26 bones, 107 ligaments, 19 muscles, and many tendons and blood vessels. Despite their complexity, it isn't "normal" for your feet to hurt. But over 75% of Americans still experience some sort of foot-related discomfort.
Feet reflect the body's general health. Arthritis and diabetes, as well as conditions affecting nerves and circulation, can show early symptoms in the feet. Discomfort or sores on your feet can be your first sign of a more serious medical problem.
