May 30, 2023
BATON ROUGE — Our Lady of the Lake Health has announced Phillip Allen, MD, as Vice President, Physician Executive - Surgery and Perioperative Services. In this role, Dr. Allen will oversee and lead the surgery department at the region’s only Level I trauma center and throughout the Baton Rouge region.
Dr. Allen joined Our Lady of the Lake Health in 2013, serving as an otolaryngologist, medical director of the graduate medical education department and, most recently, the associate chief medical officer at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center.
“Having Dr. Allen lead our surgical services is beneficial to both the surgery team and to the care we provide to the community,” said Chuck Spicer, Our Lady of the Lake Health president. “Dr. Allen has served in leadership roles at Our Lady of the Lake Health since 2019, so I am excited to see the great work and experience he will bring to this new role.”
A Louisiana native and LSU graduate, Dr. Allen completed his medical degree at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at San Antonio and his surgical internship and otolaryngology residency at the University of Cincinnati. Upon his return to Louisiana in 2013 after practicing in Georgia for 10 years, Dr. Allen joined the LSU Department of Otolaryngology faculty in 2013 and started the hospital ear, nose and throat program — only the second such program of its kind at the time —at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center.
“I have had the pleasure of serving alongside and seeing the great leadership Dr. Allen displays over the last four years in the medical staff office at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center,” said Catherine O’Neal, MD, chief medical officer at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. “Our surgical services will greatly benefit from his leadership, expertise and experience.”
In addition to his practice, Dr. Allen has a background in medical education. He serves as an instructor and lecturer for multiple courses and lecture series every year at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center, Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady University and LSU Health Science Center – New Orleans.
