Our Lady of the Lake Assumption Recognized as Acute Stroke Ready Hospital

May 16, 2022

BATON ROUGE, LA – Our Lady of the Lake Assumption Community Hospital is now recognized as an Acute Stroke-Ready Hospital in the Louisiana Stroke System thanks to a new Telestroke remote care system. This technology is new to the Assumption Parish community and will allow hospital staff to quickly treat stroke patients.

Telestroke allows for rapid virtual examination of a suspected stroke patient using video. Specialists are able to remotely review imaging and provide recommendations for or against the administration of a clot-busting drug and determine whether the patient should receive endovascular treatment (physically removing the clot). Incorporating Telestroke into a hospital’s care offerings can mean the difference between life and death for stroke patients. By enabling specialists to diagnose and determine the proper treatment for a stroke during the crucial, narrow window of time for the best chances of success, telestroke moves patients through their treatment process more efficiently, increasing their chance for survival and recovery.

“Expanding stroke care is vital for our hospital and our community,” says Donna Mullings, RN, Director of Nurses at Our Lady of the Lake Assumption Community Hospital. “By eliminating the need to transfer a patient for assessment, we are saving minutes to treatment, which is critical for survival and recovery. This program will make a difference in the lives of our patients who are experiencing a stroke and for their families.”

The new Acute Stroke Ready designation has been two years in the making for Assumption Community Hospital, which has created a special Stroke Landing Zone to care for patients. Clinical team members in nursing, pharmacy, lab and radiology involved in caring for stroke patients have received extended training for the treatment of stroke. In addition to virtual examinations by a neurologist, the system also provides rapid artificial intelligence capabilities to alert for hemorrhage and blood clots.
