Lourdes Launches Area’s First Certified Nurse Midwife Program

LAFAYETTE, La. – Our Lady of Lourdes Women’s & Children’s Hospital recently welcomed Katherine Greene, CNM, officially launching Acadiana’s first hospital-based Certified Nurse Midwife program.
Certified nurse midwives are registered nurses who successfully completed a national certification exam after graduating from a nurse-midwifery education program accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education. They are specially trained in women’s health and are qualified to provide care to women from adolescence through menopause.
As members of the Women’s & Children’s OB Hospitalist team, certified nurse midwives specialize in the care of women experiencing healthy and uncomplicated pregnancies. They assist with natural childbirth and other deliveries, offer education on alternative pain control methods during labor, provide ER assessment and treatment for expecting moms and help care for moms-to-be who may be admitted to the hospital at any point along their pregnancy journey.
Certified nurse midwives are part of the comprehensive services available at Women’s & Children’s for area moms-to-be, working closely with the Pregnancy Navigator, another service for area moms provided exclusively by Women’s & Children’s Hospital, and mom’s OB-GYN to help her create the birth experience she desires.
Greene graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Emory University in Atlanta before completing a master’s degree in Nurse-Midwifery from the University of Colorado Denver at Aurora, Colo. She worked as an Emergency Room, Intensive Care and Labor & Delivery nurse at hospitals in Atlanta and Colorado before joining Our Lady of Lourdes. She is certified by the American Midwifery Certification Board and is a member of the American College of Nurse Midwives and the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses.
