The St. Jude Baton Rouge Affiliate Clinic at Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Health has provided nearly 25 years of excellence in caring for pediatric patients with cancer and blood disorders. One of only eight St. Jude affiliates in the United States, the clinic was started in 1998 by Sheila Moore, MD, and has cared for thousands of patients across Louisiana over the past two decades and witnessed tremendous growth in its history of impacting the lives of childhood cancer patients and their families.
In 1998, the St. Jude Baton Rouge Affiliate Clinic opened the doors to its original location on the seventh floor of the Medical Plaza at Our Lady of the Lake with just a handful of staff. Today, the clinic has grown to more than 20 team members – including three physicians, two physician assistants, one pediatric nurse practitioner, eight nurses, a Child Life specialist, a social worker and a supporting team dedicated to caring for patients.
Once it relocated to the Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital in 2019, all inpatient and outpatient hematology and oncology services have shared the same floor in the new facility – an innovative model for this type of care not found anywhere else in Louisiana.
Pediatric Oncology with St. Jude
Pediatric oncology refers to the diagnosis, treatment and management of leukemia, lymphoma, brain tumors, solid tumors and other cancers affecting children up to age 17. Our knowledgeable team is experienced in caring for the unique healthcare needs of children at any age in treatment for all forms of pediatric cancer, sickle cell disease and hematological conditions.
Through our affiliation with St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, we offer state-of-the-art diagnostics and treatment to children with cancer, sickle cell disease and blood disorders. We rely on effective chemotherapy, biological therapy and molecularly targeted therapies, as well as access to Phase I and II therapies at the forefront of medical development and cutting-edge surgical care. Collaborating with researchers at St. Jude, our hematologist-oncologists have access to world-class expertise, state-of-the-art cancer research and treatment protocols.
Many of these advances were earned through cooperative study. When our patients participate in studies, they do so in an environment that is familiar and convenient to them. The marriage of uncompromising care with the warmth of a small community deeply attached to each young patient make this clinic a truly wonderful place.
