Our Lady of the Lake Robotic Surgery Institute Leads Louisiana in Robotic Surgery

July 18, 2023

BATON ROUGE — Our Lady of the Lake Robotic Surgery Institute, home to the largest fleet of surgical robots in Louisiana, recently hosted an exhibition of the newest da Vinci single port (SP) robot. The exhibition held on Thursday, July 13, and Friday, July 14, is one of the many tools the region’s leader in robotic surgery utilizes to ensure providers and patients have access to the latest advancements in care.

Intuitive, which manufactures the da Vinci system, set up a display for two days at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center for surgeons and team members to watch demonstrations of the da Vinci SP and test out the equipment. Examining and testing the da Vinci SP allowed surgeons to preview technology that could be beneficial in minimally invasive surgeries as Our Lady of the Lake Robotic Surgery Institute continues to grow.  Surgeons at Our Lady of the Lake Robotic Surgery Institute currently use some of the most advanced robotic technology available — the da Vinci XI system.

Daryl Marx, MD, FACS, FCMBS, medical director of Our Lady of the Lake Robotic Surgery Institute, was the first surgeon in Louisiana to use the state-of-the-art XI machine. Dr. Marx is optimistic about the future of technology in ensuring the best outcomes for patients.

“I’m excited that we’re not done evolving in minimally invasive surgery because of the da Vinci and robotic surgery platforms,” Dr. Marx says. “We’re able to continue pushing forward new procedures, less invasive procedures and quicker return to normal activities for our patients.”

Robotic surgeries are minimally invasive and positively impact both the patient’s recovery and the surgeon’s performance. The da Vinci XI system allows the region’s leading robotic surgeons to perform procedures with heightened precision and less scarring for the patient.

Our Lady of the Lake Robotic Surgery Institute recently added two more da Vinci XI robots to its fleet to become the largest in the state. Having more robots leads to shorter waiting times and more availability for surgeons to perform robotic surgeries.

These technological advancements add to the comprehensive and experienced care patients receive at Our Lady of the Lake Robotic Surgery Institute. Robotic surgeons across the region train and learn from surgeons at Our Lady of the Lake through residencies and fellowships. Some of the surgeons, such as Dr. Marx, travel nationwide to demonstrate their skills with the latest robotic surgery techniques and technology.

Our Lady of the Lake Robotic Surgery Institute provides the latest advances in surgical care to change the future of our communities.
