This less-invasive treatment option is available for heart disease patients too ill for open-heart surgery. The MitraClip™ device is guided through a vein in the leg to the heart, where it is clipped to reverse mitral regurgitation, the disease in which a heart valve doesn’t close properly, causing blood to leak backward.
The procedure allows for a shorter recovery time and can help patients who otherwise must rely on medication to manage their symptoms without fully treating mitral regurgitation.
In 2021, Our Lady of Lourdes Heart Hospital became home to Acadiana’s first nationally certified Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) program. The American College of Cardiology recognized the Heart Hospital for its expertise in the care of patients undergoing the TAVR procedure.
The procedure uses a catheter inserted in a small incision site to deliver a replacement valve when an existing aortic valve is damaged or not working properly. The minimally invasive procedure can help patients who may not otherwise be able to undergo open surgery.
