Primary Care

Why Having a Primary Care Provider is Important

Having a primary care physician can take much of the stress and uncertainty out of receiving healthcare. Many people don’t meet with a healthcare provider until they are feeling sick or after their condition has gotten too severe.

Otherwise known as a PCP, this is your first point of care, trained to diagnose and treat a multitude of common conditions, such as sinus infections, urinary tract infections, the flu and more. They are the ones who see you for your annual checkup, armed with your medical history and notes from previous visits, and you can see them more often if needed.

They can also help you manage chronic conditions, such as high blood pressure, anxiety, heart disease, diabetes and other health problems. Your PCP can address any health concerns that may come up and then refer and coordinate care with specialists when necessary.

How Frequently Should Adults See a Primary Care Provider?

Establishing a relationship now with a primary care physician is important to keeping you healthy in the future. As we get older, a variety of screenings for certain types of cancers and other conditions become necessary, and a PCP can help you prepare to reach each of those benchmarks.

Besides screenings, a PCP can get you on a regular routine of annual physicals and other wellness checks, constantly monitoring your medical chart to stay on top of any changes in your health.

People between the ages of 18-39 should make an appointment at least once every two years for men, and once every one to two years for women. Those in the 40-64 age range should visit their PCP once per year for a physical. Those visits can increase for people over 64.
